Report of the Library Director for June, 2013

Summer program has begun, New Friday and Saturday Hours, New library staff

Circulation
June circulation activity was 5,706, which is 4.9% higher than last month, and 0.5% lower than last June.
Because I checked these statistics on July 1st, I expect that they do not include the last few days of June, and for them to be revised higher.  This is the first month I have been able to compare to the previous year’s Evergreen circulation total.

Laptops: 12.  Nooks: 4.  Games: 73.

Unique Patrons
Upton Library currently has 2,579 items checked out to 542 unique patrons.
3,977 residents of Upton are registered borrowers from Upton Town Library.  Our registered borrowers also include residents of the following towns: Whitinsville 80, Mendon 80, Grafton 45, Milford 26, Uxbridge 12, Hopkinton 10, Worcester 8, and Non-CWMARS member towns 39.
689 residents of Upton are registered borrowers at other CWMARS member libraries.

Plans for Next Month
1) Continue Summer Program events
2) Training for new Circulation Clerk and Library Pages
3) Start ARIS report for State.

Summer Reading Program
Registration has begun, so far 212 children have signed up and received their summer reading packets.  Registration will continue through the summer.
The kick-off event went well, Little Red Wagon always does a great job.  Attendance was lower that I would have liked (77), I attribute that to the fact that we had to move the program inside because of the heat, and that we were competing with a circus in Mendon on the same night.
Babysitting class program filled up, and we plan to offer another session in the end of August, because we had people on a waiting list.
During July we have several more children’s events, and we will be decorating the library with cave art and the glow worm created by the children.

Library Improvements
The written report on the mold inspection has been delayed.  I hope to receive it either today or during this week for the Trustees to review.
I have included with my report a short summary of both the short term and long term options for improving the library facilities.
The short term options range from using our appropriated $60,000 and other available funds to implement our interior improvements up to a large scale renovation of the Knowlton-Risteen building.

Staff Hiring
Job offers have been made for the open library positions of Circulation Clerk and Library Page.
As of July 1st, we have received verbal acceptances, and are working on processing the paperwork required to let people start working.
Hopefully, the new employees can start on Tuesday, July 2nd, and we’ll have enough time for training before Matthew leaves on vacation.

Director Vacation
Speaking of which, Matthew is taking vacation from July 8th through the 13th.

July Schedule
Our new hours start July 1st, and will be:
Tues, Weds, Thurs 10am – 8pm, Friday 10am-2pm, Saturday 9am-5pm.
I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from patrons looking forward to the longer Saturday hours.
We will be closed on Thursday, July 4th, and open 10am-2pm on Friday July 5th.
