Circulation
Circulation for June was 5,366 items. This is a increase from both last month, May 2009 (29% increase) and from last year, June 2008 (4.1% increase). This is also a new record for June circulation, but not quite as high as our overall one month record from July 2008. 5,548 items were checked out at our circulation desk.
New Patron Registrations
27 new patrons registered in June.
Collection Development
We added approximately 114 items to our collection in June.
A sales representative from BBC audiobooks presented information on their standing order plans. I am mostly happy with our current plan from Recorded Books, but I would like to get a wider variety of titles. RB focuses heavily on thrillers, with the occasional romance. We enroll in the smallest standing order plan RB offers, so we can’t cut back without dropping the plan entirely. I would like to add the BBC audiobooks plan, which costs approx. $2,400 per year. That would almost double our total audiobook expenditure. (in fy09 we spent $3,100 on audiobooks.) Books on CD are only 2% of our total circulation, but we do get a lot through interlibrary loan which suggests that our collection is not adequate to our demand. The BBC plan includes non-fiction titles, which is a weak point of our audio collection.
Public Computers
I have submitted a grant request to the Upton Men’s club for an amount of $2,825 for the improvements to our public computer services. I hope to hear back from them by the end of July.
Summer Reading Program
As of June 30th, 410 children have registered for the Summer Reading program. Registrations will continue and pictures of children and their “space buddies” have started to trickle in.
Programs
Library book group: 9 people met on June 24th.
Senior book group: 5 people met on June 2nd.
Preschool Storytime averaged 10 children per session. Attendance was very erratic, ranging from a low of 2 to a high of 26. Next year we plan on having only morning storytime in June.
TinyTots LapSit StoryTime is over for the summer and will resume in September.
TeenTuesday was attended by 19 young adults.
Library Table: 4 visits, averaged 7 patrons and 15 items.
Special Events in June
June 11th – 48 patrons attend a storytime / author visit with Carol Weis, “When the Cows Got Loose”
June 13th – 102 patrons participate in Garden Day, a plant swap / booksale / composter sale. This event was great fun, and we plan on making it an annual event earlier in the spring.
June 17th – 225 patrons visit the Lil' Folk Farm petting zoo on the library lawn. We had beautiful weather and the Friends gave out free sno-cones.
June 18th-19th – 14 teens take the Red Cross Babysitting course. Our next session in August is almost full already.
June 24th – 175 patrons at live theatre performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in Nipmuc auditorium. The troupe from UNH did a great job, but the script preserved most of Shakespeare’s original language, so it was less accessible for the children than previous years’ performances.
Volunteers
17 items were delivered to 2 patrons on June 2nd.
FULTI have been adding a lot of extra activities to our summer events, such as sno-cones, booksales and facepainting.
Upcoming Events in July
July 15th – Family movie night in the library, “Fly Me to the Moon” rated G, 6:30pm.
July 21st – Singer / Storytellers Davis Bates and Roger Tincknell 2:00pm at Nipmuc Auditorium
July 21st – Author presentation / book signing with Hank Phillippi Ryan, channel 7 news reporter and author of “Prime Time”, a light mystery. 6:30pm, Town Hall.
Plans for Next Month
1) Start gathering data for ARIS forms.
2) Hopefully start implementation of new computing services.
3) Catch up on backlog of items to be withdrawn from collection.
